Oysterman in Natural

$58.00

Quaker Marine Supply’s founder and Coast Guard veteran, Joe Kadison, designed this hat with function in mind based on his own experiences on the water. Like many purpose-built items, the Oysterman developed a singular personality along the way. To start, the bill is long. At 4 3/4” long, the Oysterman’s brim is 50% longer than your standard ball cap. Why? Because it actually offers sun protection when this long. The black shiny material on the brim is the same that is used on the visors of the midway caps worn by police officers. Joe Kadison selected this material because it repelled water.

While most hats today are a standard 6-panel, this hat is constructed with 4 lateral panels to deliver a low profile that reduces windage. Like the original, it features four eyelets on each side panel that provide ventilation. It is made in sturdy canvas to perform and last and has a dark green faux-leather underbrim to absorb reflected light.

Sometimes, when you have the courage to choose functionality over fashion, you wind up circling back to fashion’s doorstep. We hope you enjoy this hat as much as we do.

*The Oysterman is shown with a curved bill but ships flat.

Long Live The Longbill

The Oysterman is the most famous of Quaker Marine’s classics. It was a favorite of Ernest Hemingway, who wore it duck hunting in Idaho and sport fishing in Cuba and Key West. Quaker Marine offered this hat for more than 60 years before the business closed down during the Great Recession.

It is now being manufactured once again – by hand – in the original factory in the USA.
