Heidarvatn Oysterman in Natural

$78.00

"Set the Hook!"

We teamed up with Heidarvatn, the legendary Icelandic fly fishing lodge, to create a limited collection of custom caps, shirts, and fly fishing accessories. Built for long days chasing Sea-run Brown trout and Arctic char in Iceland or Brookies in the Catskills, the collection carries the same practical spirit no matter where you're casting.

Quaker Marine Supply’s founder and Coast Guard veteran, Joe Kadison, designed this hat with function in mind based on his own experiences on the water. Like many purpose-built items, the Oysterman developed a singular personality along the way. To start, the bill is long. At 4 3/4” long, the Oysterman’s brim is 50% longer than your standard ball cap. Why? Because it actually offers sun protection when this long. The black shiny material on the brim is the same that is used on the visors of the midway caps worn by police officers. Joe Kadison selected this material because it repelled water.

While most hats today are a standard 6-panel, this hat is constructed with 4 lateral panels to deliver a low profile that reduces windage. Like the original, it features four eyelets on each side panel that provide ventilation. It is made in sturdy canvas to perform and last and has a dark green faux-leather underbrim to absorb reflected light.

This limited edition cap includes three embroideries along both side panels and back panels.

*The Oysterman is shown with a curved bill but ships flat.

Long Live The Longbill

The Oysterman is the most famous of Quaker Marine’s classics. It was a favorite of Ernest Hemingway, who wore it duck hunting in Idaho and sport fishing in Cuba and Key West. Quaker Marine offered this hat for more than 60 years before the business closed down during the Great Recession.

It is now being manufactured once again – by hand – in the original factory in the USA.

Iconic!

"I just replaced my last oysterman in nautical red that I wore Seaweed harvesting in Northern California for the last 5 years until it was almost unrecognizably worn and bleached. I love this hat. This is an iconic hat whose unique aesthetic is lead by brilliant functionality. My face is well protected, and the bill never gets wet."

Brim Adjustment

"I’m a guy who spends much of the summer at beach or pool. I need to protect my head with recent bouts with skin cancer on my nose and forehead. I enjoy the long brim but need a period of adjustment when driving and reading. Over all very pleased with the Oysterman ."

Why an Oysterman Hat?

"I had been searching for a longer brimmed hat that would cover my face from the sun from the mouth to the forehead. Finally I found it! As a light haired, blue-eyed man, I didn’t always wear enough sun screen or often forgot to reapply. I was recently diagnosed with Basel Cell Carcinoma on my nose, despite wearing 60 SPF on my face, neck and ears. I have a sun hat, but I also like to wear a cap style hat. The long bill covers my nose quite nicely, whereas a regular ball cap doesn’t do the job. I’ve only had it a week or so and I sweat profusely when I hike so the front of the hat is often soaked after a hike. That makes me a bit concerned about the longevity of the hat. Other than that, the fact that you guys sell out of your other colors very fast I like it a great deal. You should probably think about marketing it to dermatologists."
